Just Add H2O
I am not one for a green thumb. Normally if I get a plant it dies within a few weeks or at the most a couple of months. Definitely don't rely on me to plant anything in the ground and have it survive and produce flowers, fruit or anything else.
However, since I have been off I have been watering my plants that hang on our wrap around porch. They have grown so much and are really looking great. As I was watering them today I was thinking about my Christian walk with the Lord.
It takes work to make our faith grow. Sometimes we have to go through hard time or testing...doubt or backsliding...sometimes we just have to make it through the day. Whatever it is we want to see our faith grow, or at least I think we do.
However, to have our faith grow we need to "just add water". When we are walking with the Lord, reading His Word, talking with Him, learning about Him, and fellowshipping with other believers we are moving in the right direction.
I could throw my hands up and say because I don't have a "green thumb" then I can't have flowers on my porch. But instead I still buy them every season and the key is to nurture them and above all water them. Water...how simple yet so important.
Fellowship. When we are in the body of believers we can be challenged, learn, and be encouraged. Isn't this what we need to help our faith. Iron sharpens Iron Proverbs 27:17. How are we to grow when we pull away from the body and allow ourselves to be weakened and thwarted by the enemy.
Communication. When we are talking with the Lord then we are able to see our sin, praise Him openly, and lean on Him for support. If we cannot talk with the Lord then how do we think we will grow?
Read His Word. Saturation I believe is key. We so often do not make time to read His word. I know that I struggle with this often. However, when I am in the Word on a regular basis and constantly thinking about what Christ has done for me and His character (which is unchangable) I am moved toward adding to my faith (2 Peter 1:5-9).
I have been reading a short book by John MacArthur called "Quest for Character". It has been going over the Beatitudes, then the 2 Peter passage (adding to our faith), and then ends up on the Fruits of the Spirit. It's a great read.
All in all I think we too often cop out of working on adding to our faith...allowing it to grow...allowing it to bloom. When we do this we miss blessings and knowledge.
In the last flower pot on my porch is a very small birds nest and the eggs just hatched. These beautiful birds are the blessing for having a healthy plant. If it wasn't a full bloom of flowers then it would be a target for prey. However, since I have been watering them they have a great place to make a nest and have some babies...blessings.
Because we cop out of these important things we miss these other opportunities and in turn we hurt ourselves and others around us. We allow not only the enemy to attack us but we attack ourselves. Sometimes we are our worst enemy and who knows this better than Satan himself. He wants to discourage you from being in the flock. He wants to discourage you from speaking with the Lord. He wants to fill your schedule so that there is no time to learn more about our wonderful Lord. So he does...he slowly tells us lies and pulls us into the darkness and before you know it...the plant is dead.
Don't allow this to happen. It's simple...just add water.
